THURSDAY, AUGUST 27 Rider #1: Hi, I don't think the programmer(s) for the new automated steet car system had ever take a muni ride. Now, the cars stop at each station longer than manual system. The schedule of the cars is like a joke. I have experienced 5 K's and 4 N's in the roll without single L. As a result, the average commute time is much longer than the old manual system. What is going on ? A green and frustrated commuter Rider #2: I bought a house close to muni to take advantage of public transportation (West Portal station and K,L and M line). Living in a world-class city - one expects nothing less than world-class service - how about 3rd class... but, no class is going too far! I have dealt with trains jerking to a stop and thankfully I have been pinned down like a sardine so, I barely felt a thing, I have waited up to 45 minutes on a Friday night for a train going outbound - one that was not full by the time it got to Montgomery stop. I have also been stuck in tunnels for what seemed like eternity... and I have been riding muni only since April. However, Monday was an experience I was not ready for... I got to the station at 8:30 AM and about 10 minutes later got a packed train. The train kept stopping and waiting and screeching to a halt and throwing us forward. Coming to a screeching halt again, we finally got to Civic Station where the doors would not open. We sat there for 10 minutes, finally the doors opened. I got off the train and hurried upstairs. When I requested a transfer from the secondary booth operator she told me "NO." I explained the situation and she again said "NO." I asked her to call a supervisor and she said "NO." I then tried to call the police -- ready to go postal (oh, Muni isn't a government agency, silly me!). I picked up the white phone and got another operator at another booth down the hall. She was kind and helpful and I walked to her booth at the opposite end of the station. She gave me a transfer and the I filed a complaint. I went upstairs and took a bus down Market. I got to work at 10:20 AM. It took me an hour to get home safely that night - of which I was thankful! I have driven my car ever since. Rider #3: I would like to applaud MUNI for doubling the # of F trains from Castro to Downtown. It made my commute a lot easier and I think that this action should be permanent. Rider #4: I live at one end of the F Line and work near the other, so that has been my transit mode of choice for some time now, although even the F Line has been a challenge to my nerves (as when there is a serious problem with the subway and the old trolly gets jammed with desperate riders from Castro Station). There have been times, however, when I wonder why there isn't more F Line trolleys during rush hours. Even though they are, by design, slower then the underground, that is not always the case when there is a subway problem as there often is. The F Line is much, much more RELIABLE!!! But this morning, there were several more F Line trolleys added, and it was a pleasure! More underground sufferers had relief of the current fiasco taking place in our subways, and we didn't have to endure jammed trolleys (which only hold everyone up). I hope the additional F Trolleys are here to stay! Rider #5: Fine, a new computer system. Fine, POP is implemented. Fine, no E-Line (let's just rationalize that expenditure.) But, hello, you'd hope that by taking a metro that is in a tunnel, not bothered by street traffic, bicyclists or any of the other possible surface-Muni detractions, you might just go a mile in less than an hour. My co-workers commute from Pittsburg (!) faster than I commute from Church & Market. How humiliating. Why does a straight shot down Market Street turn into a such painful ordeal? Why do we sit in tunnels so long that people pull the emergency door-open? How can it possibly take 15 minutes to go from Montgomery to Embarcadero? In such a fine city, such an absolutely embarassing transportation system. Mayor Brown should be ashamed. And the City should hire some people to fix it, not to litigate about it. Rider #6: just another frustrated Metro rider. Thank heaven for the F!
