“Transportation for America” advocates more mass transit spending

Shovel ReadyWhere should Congress spend the proposed stimulus package? A national coalition called Transportation for America (mainly unions, environmental organizations, and transit advocates) is lobbying for increased spending on mass transit, and not just more highways. Lots of mass transit projects nationwide can be considered “shovel ready,” the buzzword du jour for economic stimulus.

Rails over highways, we can’t keep spending on oil and ancient 50’s era bridges from the 50’s when proper mass transit gives a better value for each dollar spent over time.

Exactly. Many of the proposed mass transit projects would have much more effect on the economy, not just because they will create jobs, but also because they’ll move more people faster. (for example, high speed rail, and the NY Second Avenue Subway.) All that time and money saved will allow people to spend or save more!
